Without a doubt, the ultimate highlight of our entire trip was the Kauai Ultimate Helicopter Tour. Even though Grant might appear a bit bewildered in the photo below, he was simply in awe, experiencing the sheer disbelief of being inside a real helicopter. He also firmly refused to wear his headphones, leading to those slightly teary eyes! Nevertheless, it was an experience none of us will ever forget.

If you find yourself on Kauai, a helicopter ride is an absolute must-do. The primary reason? The magnificent Napali Coast. This iconic coastline is the number one sight on Kauai, and the safest and most spectacular way to witness its grandeur is by air or by sea. While tempting boat rides are available, they often come with age restrictions, typically requiring children to be at least three years old, making them unsuitable for families with toddlers like ours. Helicopter tours, on the other hand, usually do not have a strict age limit. Since Grant had just turned two, we were fortunate enough to take him as a lap child, avoiding the need to purchase an additional seat.

As it was our first helicopter ride, the entire experience was incredibly exhilarating. We soared incredibly close to towering mountains, hovered over the breathtaking Waimea Canyon—often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”—and witnessed countless colossal waterfalls cascading down lush green cliffs. Beyond the exhilarating helicopter ride, much of our time was spent on leisurely drives along Kauai’s stunning coastlines, exploring picturesque scenic routes and discovering hidden beach gems. We dedicated one entire day to beach hopping and driving along the North Shore, venturing all the way to Ke’e Beach, which marks the farthest accessible point by car on this side of the island. Another day was set aside for similar explorations of the South Shore.

It’s important to note that when I say a day devoted to driving, I mean a relaxed 3-4 hours at most. Kauai is a relatively small island, which makes it incredibly accessible and perfect for unhurried exploration. This compact size contributes significantly to its reputation as a wonderfully laid-back destination, allowing families to discover its beauty without long, tiring commutes.

During our North Shore exploration, we made a delightful stop at the Limahuli Garden and Preserve, a stunning botanical garden situated conveniently close to Ke’e Beach. We enjoyed a leisurely one-mile hike through the meticulously maintained gardens, a perfect length for curious toddlers and adults alike. It’s undeniably beautiful, offering a convenient service center with options for food, refreshing shave ice, and equipment rentals. However, its popularity means it can get quite crowded, which wasn’t quite the serene experience we sought for a toddler. Knowing this, we made our way to Baby Beach, a smaller, more tranquil stretch of sand just a couple of miles away. Baby Beach proved to be absolutely perfect for us to unwind and let Grant play in the calm, shallow waters for a couple of hours without the hustle and bustle.

• Glass Sand Beach: This tiny, unique “beach” is covered in colorful, sea-smoothed glass particles, offering a fascinating and unusual sight. It truly feels like stepping onto a different planet, with the iridescent grains sparkling under the sun.
• Spouting Horn Beach Park: This natural wonder features a blowhole that powerfully shoots ocean water high into the air, often accompanied by a distinct “horn” sound created by compressed air. It’s quite captivating to watch, reminiscent of a mini Old Faithful in Yellowstone, but with much more frequent and dramatic eruptions. This also makes for a quick yet memorable visit, providing entertainment for all ages as the waves interact with the lava tube.

Since more adventurous activities like kayaking weren’t feasible with Grant, this tour offered a fantastic alternative to experience the “only navigable river” in all of Hawaii. Garrat and I share a deep love for farmer’s markets, so researching local options was high on our priority list. We were thrilled to discover that the Kapaa Farmer’s Market was conveniently located nearby. This market truly impressed us with its vibrant atmosphere and an abundant selection of beautiful, fresh fruits and vegetables. Of course, no visit would be complete without enjoying freshly cracked coconuts, a quintessential Hawaiian treat! It was a delight to browse the stalls, interact with local vendors, and immerse ourselves in the island’s agricultural bounty.

And let me tell you, Hawaiian avocados are absolutely divine! They are incredibly creamy with an intensely nutty flavor, reminiscent of pine nuts. A true culinary delight that you simply must try!

Back at the resort, afternoons were often spent relaxing by the pool, cooling down with refreshing shave ice – the perfect way to combat the tropical warmth after a morning of exploration.

Most mornings, we indulged in the extensive buffet breakfast offered at our resort. As a pregnant traveler with fluctuating cravings, the wide variety of options was an absolute blessing. I could enjoy a little bit of everything each day, from fresh fruits to savory dishes, ensuring a satisfying start to our adventures.

We also thoroughly enjoyed breakfast at Kalapaki Beach Hut. This charming little eatery boasted a gorgeous view from its upper level, making our morning meals even more delightful as we watched the waves roll in.

Unexpected Gems and Local Favorites for Lunch & Dinner

One evening, while searching for a Pho restaurant, we serendipitously stumbled upon the cozy Lemongrass Grill. We were so glad we did! This delightful restaurant offered truly delicious food. Garrat savored their “drunken duck,” which he declared absolutely delicious, while I enjoyed a wonderfully fragrant lemongrass seafood stew. It was an unexpected culinary highlight.

Since my craving for Pho persisted, we made sure to find the perfect spot the very next day: Pho Kauai. Their Pho was excellent, and surprisingly, their fried rice was equally amazing, making it a highly recommended stop for authentic and flavorful Vietnamese cuisine.

Another establishment I wholeheartedly recommend is Chicken in A Barrel BBQ. We were so impressed that we dined there twice! Our first visit included their sampler platter, and we were instantly hooked on their incredibly flavorful smoked BBQ chicken. It was truly phenomenal, and a must-try for any BBQ enthusiast.

Oh, by the way, Kauai is brimming with wild chickens! You’ll encounter chickens roaming freely everywhere, often accompanied by their adorable armies of little chicks. They add a charmingly rustic and unexpected element to the island’s landscape.
