A warm welcome back to my blog with an image of fresh baked goods, hinting at new culinary adventures in our new kitchen.

A Heartfelt Return to My Digital Home

Oh, how I’ve missed this! It feels like an eternity since I last connected with you all here on the blog. The silence has been long, but the reasons have been wonderfully overwhelming. To say I’ve missed blogging, sharing delicious recipes, and capturing the beauty of cakes, macarons, and every culinary creation in between would be a massive understatement. This space, and more importantly, you – my incredible readers – have always felt like home, and returning to it now brings a wave of immense joy and gratitude.

A profound thank you goes out to each of you who reached out during my absence, checking in and sending your warm wishes. Your kindness and unwavering support mean more to me than words can express. You are far more than just readers; you are cherished friends, and I truly owe you a comprehensive explanation for my prolonged quiet spell. Life, as it often does, threw us a couple of significant, beautiful curveballs, and I’m finally ready to share all the exciting details of our new family adventures and our spectacular new home.

Life’s Beautiful Chaos: Welcoming George and Our Grand Move

As many of you know, our family grew even bigger and brighter with the arrival of our precious little George back in July. He’s truly a bundle of joy, growing at an astonishing pace, and filling our days with endless laughter and love. Parenthood, especially with a bustling toddler and a sweet newborn, is a magnificent adventure, full of delightful challenges and unforgettable moments. And just when we thought our hands couldn’t get any fuller, we embarked on another monumental journey: moving into our brand-new house right before Christmas.

Let me tell you, navigating a major household move with both a busy toddler and a brand-new baby is an experience unlike any other! Over the years, we’d managed to accumulate a truly impressive (and slightly terrifying) amount of “stuff.” This move, therefore, presented an unparalleled opportunity for a massive purge, a chance to declutter and simplify our lives in a way we hadn’t before. It felt like a whirlwind of activity: tending to our little ones, meticulously researching and shopping for essential furniture and appliances (yes, I became a review-reading ninja, ensuring every single purchase was the absolute best fit for our family – a true #nerd moment!), endless cycles of packing and unpacking, and the satisfying process of purging and organizing every corner of our new space. The ultimate guiding principle throughout this monumental task was, of course, Marie Kondo’s iconic question: “Does it spark joy?” I asked it repeatedly, finding immense clarity and motivation in its simplicity. If you haven’t seen her show on Netflix, I highly recommend it – I’m three episodes in and completely hooked! Also, a huge shoutout to @lifeinjeneral on Instagram; their organizational tips are absolutely brilliant and have been a constant source of inspiration during this intense period of nesting and settling in.

So, that’s been the delightful chaos occupying my time and energy these past few months. But now, with the dust (mostly) settled and our little family finding its rhythm in our new surroundings, it’s time for the truly exciting part. Let’s talk about our magnificent new ranch house, a home that truly embodies a long-held dream!

A scenic view of the ranch property, hinting at the expansive and serene new home location.

Sometimes, I still have to pinch myself. The dream has become a reality: we now officially live on the ranch, surrounded by the tranquility and beauty of nature. This new chapter of ranch living has brought an incredible sense of peace and fulfillment to our family.

The Unexpected Journey to Our Dream Ranch House

Our journey to finding the perfect home on the ranch property has been a long and winding one, filled with patience and persistence. For many years, Garrat and I meticulously scouted various locations, envisioning where our future family home might stand. We finally settled on an ideal spot on the main ranch, conveniently close to my in-laws, which felt perfectly right. With the location secured, Garrat began the initial steps of planting trees and rough landscaping, laying the groundwork for what was to come. Simultaneously, we started making more serious inquiries with contractors, weighing our options between building a custom home on-site or opting for a manufactured house, each presenting its own set of advantages and challenges.

A Serendipitous Discovery: Our “As Is” Manufactured Home

It was during one of those crucial calls back in August 2017 that Garrat received an unexpected and intriguing piece of information. He was told about a manufactured house that had sustained damage from a power line during its transportation to its original owners. Due to the extent of the damage, the insurance company had declared the house a total loss, and a brand new one was being built for the original buyers. This meant the damaged, yet potentially salvageable, house was now up for sale at a significantly reduced price!

Naturally, our curiosity was piqued by this unique opportunity. We decided to embark on a 100-mile drive to assess the damage firsthand. Upon inspection, we discovered a few visibly damaged electrical circuits and some minor drywall issues. The big unknown, however, was whether there were more hidden electrical problems that could prove costly. Despite these concerns, we were completely captivated by the house itself. It was stunning, incredibly spacious at 2700 sq. ft., and boasted an abundance of large windows – a feature we had always dreamed of for natural light and scenic views! Considering the incredibly attractive sale price, which was a mere one-third of its original tag, and factoring in the estimated expenses for repairs, we concluded that this unique opportunity was absolutely worth pursuing. So, in a decision that felt both crazy and exhilarating, we bought the manufactured home as is!

The Grand Arrival and Intensive Renovation

As unconventional as it might sound, we have absolutely no regrets about that spontaneous decision. The house’s delivery was scheduled for about a year later, as we needed ample time to construct a robust foundation and basement, and the moving company itself was navigating a very busy schedule. Finally, in mid-August of 2018, the thrilling moment arrived: our magnificent house was carefully hauled by a semi-truck across vast distances. To this day, it still astounds me how such a massive structure managed to navigate the roads and arrive safely!

Once the manufactured home was meticulously placed onto its new foundation, the real work truly began. To our immense relief, further inspections revealed no additional electrical damages beyond the initially visible ones, which meant minimal drywall repairs were needed. However, the scope of work was still extensive, involving numerous critical elements that required professional expertise: plumbing installations, heating systems, new flooring throughout, comprehensive electrical finishing, detailed millwork, and, of course, a complete repaint. I confess, I was not a fan of the original wall colors in the main living areas, nor the accent walls in the bedrooms, so a fresh coat of paint to reflect our style was a high priority!

This period was a true testament to teamwork and dedication. While I was fully immersed in caring for our newborn baby and our energetic toddler, Garrat took on the monumental task of managing all the subcontractors, meticulously overseeing every aspect of the house’s transformation. From coordinating deliveries to ensuring quality craftsmanship, his efforts were tireless. It’s safe to say, we’ve truly been busy, building not just a house, but a home, piece by painstaking piece, filled with love and anticipation.

Now, with the major renovation work behind us and our family happily settled, it brings me so much joy to finally open our doors and invite you in, starting with the true heart of our home: the kitchen.

A Peek Inside: Our Newly Renovated Ranch Kitchen

Stepping into our kitchen feels like a dream, though as you can imagine, since this house was originally designed for another family, it wasn’t an exact match for my ideal dream kitchen from day one. There were a few key elements that weren’t quite what I would have chosen. My primary areas of contention were: 1. the countertops; 2. the size and placement of the pantry; 3. the divided sink; and 4. the cabinet color. It’s important to note, however, that these are undeniably “first-world problems,” and through a blend of practicality and evolving taste, I’ve found ways to not only live with them but often appreciate them!

Initial Impressions and Practical Compromises

  1. Countertops: I seriously deliberated over replacing the countertops, dreaming of a different aesthetic and material. However, the sheer cost involved was substantial, representing a significant portion of our renovation budget. After careful consideration, and a strong dose of practicality, I made peace with the existing ones. Ultimately, functionality, durability, and budget won out, and I’ve grown to appreciate their robust nature and unique character, which surprisingly complements our ranch home vibe.
  2. Pantry Size and Location: For a food blogger living remotely on a ranch, a generous, well-organized pantry is practically a necessity. Our current pantry, while functional, is certainly on the smaller side than what I envisioned. I’ve been diligently organizing it since we moved in, and it’s still very much a work in progress, constantly optimizing every inch. Fitting everything I need – from bulk ingredients to specialized baking equipment – into it has been a creative challenge, prompting me to consider repurposing another closet for less frequently used items, ensuring every ingredient and piece of equipment has its designated spot and remains easily accessible.
  3. Divided Sink: My personal preference leans strongly towards large, undivided sinks, especially for washing bulky pots, sheet pans, and large baking trays. I admit I was initially quite bummed to discover the kitchen featured a divided sink, imagining future struggles with oversized items. Yet, it’s a beautifully crafted black quartz sink, and its individual basins are quite deep and surprisingly spacious. This thoughtful design actually minimizes splashes and makes dishwashing surprisingly manageable for everyday use, so it doesn’t bother me nearly as much as I anticipated.
  4. Cabinet Color: Confession time – I, like so many others, harbored dreams of a trendy, all-white kitchen, the kind we constantly see gracing Instagram feeds, glossy magazines, and HGTV shows. Accepting the existing warm brown cabinets was initially a hurdle to overcome in my mind. However, over time, they’ve truly grown on me, particularly after we painted our walls with a stunning, crisp white paint (Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White – highly recommend it if you’re looking for a perfect, clean white!). The reality of our lives here on the farm, raising two active boys, quickly reminded me that a light and airy all-white kitchen, while aesthetically beautiful, might not be the most practical or forgiving choice for our bustling, dirt-friendly lifestyle anyway. The brown offers a warmth, depth, and resilience that truly suits our home and withstands the daily rigors of ranch life with young children.

Now that I’ve openly discussed the aspects that required a bit of adjustment and a shift in perspective, let me wholeheartedly share the features I am absolutely, madly, deeply in love with. These are the elements that truly make our kitchen sing and elevate our everyday living, blending both luxury and practicality into our new ranch home.

Features We Absolutely Adore in Our Kitchen

  • My Dream Range: This is a true showstopper and the centerpiece of my culinary world! I opted for a Miele gas range with an electric oven, and it has exceeded every expectation. I’ve dreamed of owning a gas range for so long, and it delivers flawless, precise performance for stovetop cooking, from gentle simmering to powerful searing. The electric oven is equally impressive, packed with innovative features like a rotisserie for achieving perfect, evenly cooked roasts and a “Moisture Plus” function, which is a game-changer for achieving incredibly crisp bread crusts and perfectly moist baked goods. It’s a culinary powerhouse that inspires me daily.
  • The Marvelous Pot Filler: Oh my goodness, the pot filler! I cannot adequately express my affection for this ingenious addition. Whoever conceived of this brilliant device deserves not an Oscar, perhaps, but certainly whatever prestigious prize is awarded to truly transformative inventors! It simplifies everything from filling large pasta pots to topping off a tea kettle, right at the stove, saving countless steps and heavy lifting – pure convenience that I now consider indispensable.
  • Luxurious In-Floor Heating: We made the deliberate decision to install in-floor heating throughout the entire house, and it is nothing short of amazing. Say goodbye to icy cold floors, especially during those chilly ranch mornings or frosty winter evenings! It’s particularly delightful in the bathrooms, creating a spa-like comfort that greets your bare feet with warmth. This feature truly enhances the overall comfort and coziness of our entire home, making cold seasons much more enjoyable.
  • Expansive Windows and Soaring Ceilings: These architectural elements are absolutely everything to me! The huge windows flood every room with glorious natural light, and the tall ceilings create an incredible sense of spaciousness and grandeur. I genuinely feel like I live in a castle, which is a rather fun fantasy to indulge in, especially when gazing out at the ranch landscape. There is one small caveat, however: the echo! Garrat and I sometimes find ourselves struggling to hear each other across the expansive rooms due to the pronounced echo. My hope is that as we gradually decorate the walls with pictures, paintings, and drapes, the soft furnishings will help absorb some of the sound, making conversations a little easier and the acoustics more intimate.
  • Abundant Natural Light for My Business: This feature is not just a preference; it’s an essential, non-negotiable part of my business as a food blogger. The sheer volume of natural light streaming into the kitchen means I can now capture stunning, professional-quality food photographs right where I cook and bake. This eliminates the arduous task of carefully hauling prepared dishes and delicate pastries into the living room, or finding the “perfect spot” with adequate light, as I frequently had to do in our old house. It has streamlined my workflow, significantly enhanced the quality and consistency of my content, and truly transformed my creative process.

Beyond the Main Kitchen: Thoughtful Details and Everyday Moments

Creating Functional Spaces: My Beloved Tea Drawer

Beyond the major appliances and structural elements, it’s the smaller, more thoughtful details that truly make a space feel personal, efficient, and joyous. One such detail I absolutely adore is my new tea drawer! Inspired by the brilliant organizational minds at @lifeinjeneral (seriously, go follow them on Instagram for endless inspiration!), this drawer now neatly houses almost all of my favorite teas and essential tea tools in one perfectly organized spot. It’s a little haven of calm and order, making my daily tea ritual even more enjoyable and convenient. Having everything at my fingertips for that perfect cup of tea is a small luxury that brings immense pleasure.

These quiet moments of tea breaks and taste testing are pure bliss, a chance to pause and savor the simple pleasures. Though, I must confess, this particular cheesecake was a delightful store-bought treat; sometimes, even a food blogger enjoys a little convenience and a well-deserved break from baking! It’s all part of embracing life’s balance and appreciating good food, no matter its origin.

And speaking of style and functionality, aren’t these bar stools from Wayfair just fantastic? They add a chic, modern touch to our spacious kitchen island, creating a perfect spot for casual meals, quick chats over coffee, and even a little homework or crafts for the boys as they grow. They’re comfortable, stylish, and perfectly complement the blend of rustic charm and contemporary design we’re cultivating in our home.

Our Kitchen: The True Heart of Our Ranch Home

Without a doubt, our kitchen has rapidly become my absolute favorite place in our entire house. It’s a dynamic hub where I delve into my work, experimenting with new recipes and capturing their beauty for you all. It’s where I find moments of calm and de-stress after a busy day, losing myself in the meditative rhythm of baking. It’s the bustling center where I prepare nourishing meals and delightful treats for my beloved family. More than just a functional space, it’s where we gather, share stories, enjoy delicious food, and fill the air with laughter and joy. It truly is the beating heart of our ranch home.

My boys, with their boundless energy and infectious spirits, truly make this place come alive. Their presence fills every corner with so much happiness and endless memorable moments, turning everyday activities into cherished memories. I couldn’t be more grateful for this beautiful life we are building here on the ranch, and for this wonderful home that cradles our family’s dreams and daily adventures. It’s a space where memories are made, one delicious bite and joyful moment at a time.
