Oh, hello, June! The arrival of this beautiful month marks a radiant transition into warmer days, longer evenings, and the vibrant beauty of nature in full bloom. The air is crisp, the sun is shining, and everything feels wonderfully alive. We truly missed this embrace of glorious weather and the sense of renewal it brings. It’s a time for growth, joy, and soaking in every precious moment, especially when you have a little one making incredible strides each day.
Speaking of incredible strides, it feels like just yesterday we were welcoming our tiny bundle of joy, and now, my sweet baby boy, Grant, is officially five months old! How is this even possible? The speed at which time flies with a newborn is truly baffling – a cliché, I know, but profoundly true for every parent. It seems like one moment you’re holding a fragile little infant, and the next, they’re practically sitting up and interacting with the world. It’s a constant marvel, a beautiful blur of firsts and precious moments that make every day an adventure.

Celebrating Five Months of Grant: Growth, Charm, and Changing Looks
My little man is definitely not so tiny anymore. He’s growing at an impressive pace, full of charming rolls and delightful chubbiness. At his last check-up, he weighed in at a hefty 20 pounds! He’s certainly a chunky little guy, and thankfully, he’s also one of the happiest babies around. While he can sometimes sport a rather serious expression, especially when observing something new, he’s incredibly generous with his smiles. Those big, bright grins light up our entire home and melt our hearts every single time.
It’s also fascinating to see how his appearance evolves from day to day. We recently dressed him in this adorable Mongolian outfit, lovingly made by my mom, and tell me, doesn’t he look 100% Mongolian in it? It’s a wonderful nod to his heritage, though he’s almost outgrown it already! It’s quite amusing how his features seem to shift; some days he has a distinctively Asian look, while on others, he leans more towards Caucasian features. It’s a charming mystery, a beautiful blend of his heritage that makes him uniquely him, constantly surprising us with new facets of his appearance.

Remarkable 5-Month Baby Milestones: A Journey of Discovery
Grant’s developmental leaps at five months have been truly exciting to witness. Here are some of the incredible things our little explorer is now doing:
-
Mastering Head Control and Aspiring to Sit
Grant is now holding his head up with remarkable strength and confidence! It’s such a joy to see him engage with the world from a more upright position. He absolutely loves sitting up like a big boy, supported by a comfortable cushion, of course. This newfound posture allows him to observe his surroundings with greater curiosity and interact more dynamically with us. It’s a significant step in developing his core strength and preparing him for independent sitting in the months to come. Every little wobble and triumphant hold is a testament to his growing physical abilities.
-
The Thrilling Adventure of Rolling Over
This month has brought about even more movement! Grant has fully embraced the art of rolling. He previously mastered rolling from his back to his tummy, and now, he’s completing the full circle, rolling from his tummy back to his back. This is a crucial gross motor skill, even if it sometimes involves a gentle thud as his head meets the mat in the process! It’s both incredibly cute to watch his determined efforts and a little nerve-wracking to ensure he’s always on a soft surface. His ability to change positions independently is a huge step towards greater mobility and exploration, giving him a new sense of control over his body and environment.
-
Exploring His World: The Spinning Sensation
Our little man is rarely in the same spot for very long these days. He’s discovered the joy of spinning around on his play mat! I’m not entirely sure how he manages to maneuver himself across the room, but he definitely doesn’t stay put. This constant movement is a fantastic sign of his developing motor skills and growing curiosity. He’s using his legs and arms to push and pivot, exploring the boundaries of his play space and reaching for new toys. It’s amazing to see his determination to move and discover, laying the groundwork for crawling and walking in the future.
-
Hand-Eye Coordination and Sensory Exploration: Everything Goes in the Mouth!
Grant is now in full discovery mode with his hands. He’s learning what they are for and using them to explore everything in his reach. Whether it’s my face, my hair, or his array of colorful toys, anything within grasping distance is fair game! He also spends time holding his hands right in front of his face, staring at them with intense concentration, as if trying to decipher their mysterious workings. And, of course, anything he manages to grab goes straight into his mouth – a universal baby trait as they learn about textures, shapes, and tastes through oral exploration. This oral phase is an important part of his sensory development and an indicator of developing fine motor skills.

Navigating Sleep: The Swaddle Transition and Longer Naps
Sleep has been an interesting journey this month. Since birth, Grant adored being swaddled at night and for naps; it was his cozy comfort zone. However, with his newfound strength and rolling abilities, it was time for a cold-turkey transition away from the swaddle for safety reasons. Since we made the change, he’s been waking up every 2.5-3 hours at night. It’s certainly a temporary challenge, but we’re hopeful he’ll learn to connect his sleep cycles and sleep for longer stretches soon. Once he shows consistent signs of longer nighttime sleep, we can confidently transition him from the bassinet to his crib. During the day, he typically naps for about 30 minutes, four times a day, though sometimes a little longer. Interestingly, if I lie down with him – and please, no judgment! – for a little co-sleeping session during the day, he can sleep for up to two hours! It’s a precious way for us both to catch some much-needed rest. Overall, he’s adjusting surprisingly well to life without the swaddle, and we’re celebrating every small victory in his sleep journey.

Before diving into our essential baby product recommendations, I have to give a special shout-out to my wonderful friend, Olya! She created this absolutely adorable John Deere-themed diaper cake for Grant. It was super cute, so much so that I had a genuinely hard time disassembling it when it was time to use the diapers. It was such a thoughtful and creative gift, perfectly capturing the spirit of fun and practicality. Thank you again, Olya, for your incredible generosity and talent!

1. Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment
Aquaphor – This baby healing ointment is an absolute lifesaver and a permanent fixture in our diaper bag and nursery. It’s an incredible multi-purpose product that effectively treats and prevents diaper rash while also serving as a fantastic dry skin protectant. We first discovered its magic when Grant had his very first (and thankfully, only significant) diaper rash during his initial weeks. Since then, we’ve used it religiously as a preventative measure at almost every diaper change, and it has worked wonders. More recently, Grant developed a couple of dry eczema spots on his elbows, and this ointment has been a miraculous relief, quickly soothing and healing his delicate skin. Its gentle yet potent formula makes it an indispensable tool for keeping baby’s skin soft, healthy, and protected from various irritations. If you only buy one baby ointment, make it this one!
2. Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Shampoo & Wash
Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Shampoo & Wash – When it comes to bath time, this product is a true winner. It’s a fantastic, all-natural baby wash that is incredibly gentle on delicate baby skin, making it perfect for daily use without causing any dryness or irritation. Beyond its gentle cleansing properties, it also leaves Grant smelling absolutely amazing – a clean, subtle scent that is simply delightful. A quick tip for future buyers: while the product itself is superb, I strongly advise against purchasing the pump bottle version. I’ve unfortunately received a messy package once due to the pump breaking during shipping, and I’ve read numerous other reviews detailing similar experiences. To avoid any hassle, opt for the screw-top bottles; they are just as convenient and much more reliable. This wash makes bath time a wonderfully soothing and enjoyable experience for both baby and parent.
3. WubbaNub Pacifier
WubbaNub Pacifier – For us, the pacifier is primarily a tool for comfort and a subtle cue for sleep. The WubbaNub pacifier has become an essential part of Grant’s bedtime and naptime routine. Its unique design, featuring a small plush animal (in our case, an adorable elephant) attached to the pacifier, is truly ingenious. The little elephant makes it much easier for the pacifier to stay close to his mouth, preventing it from constantly falling out and getting lost in the crib. This means fewer interruptions to his sleep and less fumbling around for us in the dark. It’s almost like a gentle hint to fall asleep, providing that extra bit of soothing comfort. The plush toy also provides a tactile experience for him, and as he grows, it will likely become a beloved transitional object. It’s a simple yet effective product that has certainly contributed to more peaceful sleep for our little one.
4. Piyo Piyo Yellow Baby Nail Scissors
Piyo Piyo Yellow Baby Nail Scissors – I’ve openly confessed my deep-seated aversion to trimming baby nails in the past. It felt like such a daunting task, fraught with the fear of accidentally nicking those tiny, delicate fingers. However, I’m happy to report that I’ve become much more confident and adept at it, largely thanks to these fantastic Piyo Piyo baby nail scissors. Their design is specifically tailored for tiny nails, offering a level of precision and safety that has truly put my mind at ease. Luckily, I haven’t had any accidents since using them, which has significantly boosted my confidence with this necessary chore. The rounded tips and ergonomic handles make them incredibly easy to use, even on squirming little hands. But oh, darn those baby nails grow fast! It feels like a never-ending battle to keep them short and smooth, preventing any accidental scratches. These scissors, however, make the task less intimidating and much more manageable, transforming a once-dreaded chore into a quick and easy routine.
Bonus Essential: The Baby Feed Tracking App
Baby Feed app – In the whirlwind of new parenthood, keeping track of everything can feel overwhelming. That’s why a reliable baby tracking app has been an absolute godsend for us. I religiously log every single detail of Grant’s day: his feeding times and amounts, diaper changes (wet or soiled), sleep patterns (naps and nighttime sleep), and even medication if needed. This meticulous tracking might seem excessive to some, but it provides invaluable data. It helps us understand his natural rhythms, identify potential issues (like unusual diaper patterns or feeding gaps), and offers a sense of control amidst the chaos. I’m still actively tracking everything with the long-term goal of reviewing all this accumulated data to identify clear patterns and ultimately develop a more predictable schedule for Grant. This app isn’t just for data; it’s a vital tool for ensuring he’s meeting his developmental needs and for making informed decisions about his care. It’s a lifesaver for tired brains and a powerful aid in establishing healthy routines for your little one.
That wraps up our latest update on Grant’s exciting five-month journey and a look at the baby products that have become indispensable in our daily lives. Thank you so much for reading and for being a part of this incredible, often exhilarating, and sometimes utterly exhausting journey of motherhood. Every day brings new discoveries, challenges, and immense joy, and sharing these moments with you makes it all the more special. Here’s to many more milestones and happy memories!
