Rome: A Whirlwind 3-Day Adventure Through History, Food, and Culture
Welcome to the grand finale of our European escapade! After enchanting visits to London and the romantic streets of Paris, our journey culminated in the breathtaking Eternal City – Rome, Italy. This travel photo journal captures the essence of our whirlwind adventure, proving that even a short stay can leave an indelible mark on your heart.

From the moment we arrived, Rome captivated us with its unparalleled blend of ancient history, vibrant street life, and, of course, legendary cuisine. Our only regret? Not extending our stay! With just three nights, which effectively translated to two full days of exploration, my partner Garrat and I found ourselves constantly contemplating rescheduling our flight. The allure of Rome was so potent, we wished we had more time to immerse ourselves fully. However, feeling a bit travel-weary, we decided to stick to our original plan, determined to pack as much magic as possible into every precious moment.

Day 1: Arrival in Rome and a Culinary Revelation
Our Roman adventure began as we touched down from Paris, arriving around 3 PM. After settling into our hotel, we embraced the Italian pace, taking some time to relax and recharge before our much-anticipated first Roman dinner. We chose Ristorante Alessio, a highly-regarded establishment just a block from our accommodation. Though we arrived relatively early for Italian dinner standards, around 6:30 PM, the restaurant was already bustling. We counted ourselves incredibly lucky to snag the very last table.
The staff at Ristorante Alessio immediately impressed us with their warmth and professionalism. Our waiter, in particular, was exceptional, not only speaking fluent English but also conversing in Japanese with another table – a testament to the restaurant’s global appeal and dedication to service. This top-notch hospitality set a wonderful tone for our evening.
And then, the food. Oh, the food! Any preconceptions I had about Italian cuisine being “overrated” were utterly shattered. For our appetizer, we indulged in a 36-month aged ham that was simply beyond words – intensely flavorful, meltingly tender, and a perfect start to our meal. For the main course, I savored their signature Strozzapreti pasta, a homemade fresh pasta dish featuring succulent clams and earthy porcini mushrooms. Garrat opted for the Calamarata pasta, adorned with salt cod and crispy breadcrumbs. Both dishes were masterpieces; the pasta cooked to an impeccable al dente, offering the perfect bite and texture. It was clear then and there: Italians possess an unparalleled mastery of pasta!
Throughout our short stay, whether we found ourselves in a cozy corner pizzeria, an elegant restaurant like Alessio, or a humble eatery, the food was consistently phenomenal. Rome truly delivers on its reputation as a culinary capital.

And let’s not forget the tiramisu! A true work of art, it was rich, creamy, and coffee-infused – an exquisite dessert that was absolutely to die for. Our first day in Rome ended on a high, filled with incredible flavors and the promise of more unforgettable experiences.
Day 2: Ancient Wonders and Market Delights
We woke to a glorious sunny Roman morning, eager to dive into the city’s iconic sights. Our day began with a leisurely stroll through the magnificent Piazza Venezia, dominated by the colossal Victor Emmanuel II Monument. The piazza buzzed with activity, a lively symphony of music, sunshine, and happy people, perfectly encapsulating Rome’s vibrant energy.

Next on our itinerary was the bustling Campo de’ Fiori Market, an essential Roman experience. While undeniably popular with tourists, its authentic Italian charm is undeniable. We spent the morning happily lost amidst the stalls, engaging our senses with a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and aromas. We tasted an array of truffle sauces, exotic spices, artisan cheeses, and, most memorably, a variety of local liquors.
We stumbled upon a wonderful family-owned stall that spanned several aisles, and the vendors treated us like old friends. Our tasting journey began with local **liquors**, which certainly helped set a joyful and relaxed mood. Communicating through a delightful mix of broken English and enthusiastic Italian, we laughed, we sampled, and we truly connected with the local culture. It was an incredibly fun and immersive experience, offering a genuine glimpse into Roman daily life.

Exploring the Colosseum and Roman Forum
In the afternoon, we made our way to one of Rome’s most enduring symbols: the iconic Colosseum. Even from the outside, its sheer scale and historical gravitas are profoundly moving. We didn’t venture inside this time, preferring to simply walk around, basking in the beautiful weather and enjoying a refreshing Italian gelato. Imagining gladiators, emperors, and roaring crowds in this ancient amphitheater sent shivers down my spine. The Colosseum stands as a powerful testament to Rome’s glorious past, an architectural marvel that has witnessed centuries of human drama.

Adjacent to the Colosseum lie the sprawling ruins of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, a landscape dotted with incredible details in every crumbling archway and ancient column. So much history is embedded in these stones, revealing the foundations of Western civilization. Walking amidst these majestic ruins, it’s easy to feel transported back in time, marveling at the ingenuity and grandeur of the Roman Empire.

For dinner, we sought out Trattoria il Tettarello, a highly popular pizza restaurant known for its authentic Roman pies. Once again, fate smiled upon us as we managed to secure the very last table right by the entrance. A long line of hungry patrons stretched outside, patiently waiting for over an hour for their turn. It felt a little awkward, enjoying our delectable pizza as watchful eyes peered in through the glass wall, but the sheer deliciousness of our meal quickly made us forget our surroundings. The pizza was everything we hoped for: a perfect crispy crust, fresh ingredients, and flavors that transported us straight to pizza heaven. I still dream of going back for just one more slice!

Day 3: Art, Spirituality, and the Heart of Rome
Our final full day in Rome commenced with a delightful breakfast at our hotel, the trendy iQ Hotel Roma. This hotel was a fantastic choice – incredibly clean, cozy, and thoughtfully designed. While traditional Italian breakfast often consists of just a cappuccino and a croissant, iQ Hotel Roma understood its international clientele, offering a generous full breakfast buffet complete with scrambled eggs and sausages. Every item was super delicious, providing a hearty start to our busy day.

After breakfast, we set off towards the iconic Trevi Fountain, passing through the vibrant Piazza Navona. To our slight disappointment, the Trevi Fountain was undergoing maintenance and temporarily closed. While we couldn’t partake in the famous coin toss there, we found another beautiful fountain nearby to honor the tradition, ensuring our return to Rome! Piazza Navona itself was a spectacle of Baroque grandeur, bustling with street artists, musicians, and tourists, its energy and life truly infectious. Bernini’s Fountain of Four Rivers stood majestically at its center, a true masterpiece.

It was in Piazza Navona that we discovered a gifted artist showcasing his incredible paintings. His work immediately caught my eye, and I knew I had to bring a piece of Rome home with me. After admiring his entire collection, I settled on a gorgeous painting depicting a charming Italian seaside town. I can’t wait to have it framed and proudly displayed, a constant reminder of our Roman adventure.
The Spiritual Heart: Exploring Vatican City
The afternoon was dedicated to exploring the awe-inspiring Vatican City, the smallest independent state in the world and the spiritual and artistic heart of Catholicism. The journey through the Vatican Museums, leading up to the Sistine Chapel, was a mesmerizing experience in itself. Marvelous paintings, intricate frescoes on towering ceilings, and countless sculptures filled every space, creating an overwhelming sense of beauty and history. It was truly intoxicating and breathtaking.

Stepping inside the legendary Sistine Chapel, the official residence of the Pope, was an experience unlike any other. While I may not be a religious person in the traditional sense, the sheer magnitude and spiritual significance of the space were palpable. I stood beneath Michelangelo’s masterpieces – “The Last Judgment” and the iconic “Creation of Adam,” with God and Adam’s hands almost touching. The rule of no photography inside the chapel, initially a slight bummer, turned out to be a blessing. It forced me to fully immerse myself in the moment, to truly be present and admire the unparalleled artistry without the distraction of a camera. It was a profound and unforgettable encounter with human genius.

From the Vatican Museum, we caught a beautiful peek into the serene Vatican Gardens, a lush expanse of greenery and fountains, offering a quiet contrast to the bustling museums.

Our final stop in Vatican City was the magnificent St. Peter’s Basilica. Standing beneath its colossal dome, a feat of Renaissance engineering, was an experience that truly humbles you. The scale, the intricate details, and the sheer artistry of this sacred space are simply overwhelming. Michelangelo’s Pietà, though viewed from a distance, also left an enduring impression.

Farewell, Rome, Until We Meet Again!
Our brief Roman holiday, though too short, was packed with indelible memories, exquisite tastes, and profound cultural immersion. Rome truly is an open-air museum, a city where ancient history breathes alongside vibrant modern life. We left with full hearts, inspired minds, and a firm promise: Rome, we love you, and we will absolutely be back!
Thank you for joining me on this journey through my travel photo journals from London, Paris, and this final, unforgettable stop in Rome. Happy travels!
