Balancing Work and Toddler Life: A Work-at-Home Mom’s Journey in the Kitchen
Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms and mothers-to-be out there! As we celebrate this special day dedicated to recognizing the incredible women who nurture and inspire us, I wanted to pull back the curtain and share a personal glimpse into my daily reality as a work-at-home mom. Specifically, I want to show you how I navigate the exciting, often chaotic, yet always rewarding world of food blogging and recipe development with my energetic toddler son, Grant, as my constant companion and unofficial assistant.

The Unique Path of a Work-at-Home Mom (WAHM)
I often find myself explaining my professional identity, as it doesn’t quite fit the conventional definitions. I don’t consider myself a full-time stay-at-home mom, yet I’m also not a full-time working mom who commutes to an office daily. Instead, I proudly identify as a work-at-home mom (WAHM). My workspace often encompasses my bustling kitchen, my makeshift photography studio, and my laptop, all within the comforting, unpredictable environment of my home. This lifestyle grants me incredible flexibility and the priceless opportunity to witness my son’s every milestone firsthand, but it undeniably comes with its own unique set of challenges.
Working from home, especially with a vibrant toddler underfoot, is far from easy. While the advantages are abundant – no commute, a flexible schedule, and the ability to instantly comfort a scraped knee – the disadvantages are just as prevalent and can sometimes feel overwhelming. There’s the constant temptation of household chores vying for your attention: a load of laundry needing to be started, dishes piling up in the sink, or the perpetual question of what to cook for dinner. These domestic demands can easily derail a focused work session. And if you have a curious, active little one like Grant, the concept of dedicated, uninterrupted work time can often feel like a distant dream. In such scenarios, nap times and late nights frequently become the prime working hours for many WAHMs. However, amidst this delicate balance, we’ve also discovered the immense joy of integrating a bit of work together, transforming everyday tasks into shared adventures and learning opportunities.
Despite the inherent complexities and the constant juggle, I wouldn’t change this life for anything in the world. I absolutely cherish the experience of working from home alongside my toddler. It’s a profound privilege to integrate him into my passion for food creation, watching him learn, explore, and grow within such a dynamic and sensory-rich environment. It’s these precious, often messy, and wonderfully candid moments that truly define our workdays, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I’m thrilled to share some of our most memorable and fun behind-the-scenes glimpses with you, showcasing the reality of balancing a passion for food with the joys of motherhood.
Grant’s Evolving Role: From Observer to Active Kitchen Helper
It’s truly fascinating to reflect on how Grant’s involvement in my work has evolved over time. Just over a year ago, things were considerably simpler. He wasn’t yet adept at scaling chairs and tables in a matter of seconds, which meant I had a few precious moments to capture the perfect shot before tiny hands inevitably reached for the meticulously arranged food. Now, taking a “clean” photo requires lightning-fast reflexes and a keen eye, as he’s almost always right there, ready to investigate, or more often, taste-test. I’ve learned to embrace these candid, sometimes chaotic, captures as an authentic part of our unique creative process – they tell a story all their own.

In those earlier days, I could often set up a video shoot right beside him while he played, and he’d watch, mesmerized by the camera, lights, and my movements. He was a quiet, engaged spectator. But toddlers grow incredibly quickly, and with that growth comes an explosion of curiosity, mobility, and a desire to participate. It wasn’t long before observing turned into active interaction, and the passive spectator transitioned into an enthusiastic, hands-on participant in our kitchen adventures.

Before I knew it, Grant developed a keen interest in the “art” of photography itself. He’d grab a toy camera, or even try to reach for mine, mimicking my every move as I composed a shot. This playful imitation has become one of my favorite aspects of our shared work environment. It’s no longer just about getting the perfect recipe photo; it’s about fostering his imagination, allowing him to explore his world, and understanding the creative process in his own unique, adorable way. These moments are a beautiful reminder of how children learn by watching and participating.
The Perks of the Job: Snacking and Official Taste-Testing with My Little Helper
One of the undisputed advantages of working in a food-centric environment is that snacking on the job is not just permitted, it’s actively encouraged! Grant is always the first in line for a little nibble, ensuring that our recipes meet the highest standards of toddler approval. These spontaneous snack breaks are not only delightful but also fantastic opportunities to introduce him to a wide variety of foods, flavors, and textures, effectively transforming our kitchen into a delicious and interactive learning lab.

And of course, taste-testing on set is a crucial and official part of the recipe development process. Who better to give an honest, unadulterated review than a discerning toddler? On one particularly memorable occasion, we were shooting a rich and decadent Supreme Chocolate Cheesecake. Grant, with his sophisticated palate, gave it his most enthusiastic seal of approval. It was, indeed, absolutely delish, and his joyful reaction was all the validation I needed!

Sometimes, the props and accessories prove to be far more intriguing than the magnificent food itself. A mighty Thanksgiving turkey, for example, which I had painstakingly prepared, proved to be far less interesting to Grant than a vibrant, fun trivet positioned beside it. It’s a delightful reminder that their world is full of wonders and curiosities that we, as adults, often overlook. Sometimes, the simplest objects spark the most joy and imaginative play, shifting the focus of the entire shoot in the most unexpected ways.

Grant, the Proactive Kitchen Assistant: Preparing, Styling, and Healthy Snacking
Grant isn’t just a taste tester; he’s an increasingly active participant in the entire food preparation process. In this particular instance, we were diligently prepping vegetables for the upcoming week and simultaneously shooting content for my new website, Busy Cooks. He absolutely adores snacking on raw veggies during these sessions, turning a routine task into an exciting culinary exploration. It’s a fantastic, hands-on way to encourage healthy eating habits from a very early age, making what could be perceived as a chore into an enjoyable and educational activity.

He’s also proven himself to be a fantastic sous chef when it comes to baking. On this specific day, he was helping me make delicious Pain au Chocolat, also affectionately known as chocolate croissants. Rolling croissant dough with a miniature rolling pin proved to be one of his most favorite jobs ever! The tactile experience of working with the soft dough, the delightful anticipation of warm, flaky pastries, and the aromatic blend of butter and chocolate filling the kitchen – these are the wonderful, sensory-rich memories we’re creating together, one pastry at a time.

Beyond simple preparation, Grant has even shown remarkable signs of being an aspiring food stylist! He genuinely loves to engage in the artistic process of styling and arranging the scenes for our photographs. Here, you can see him meticulously styling seared scallops for a shoot. Just look at his face – so serious, so focused, and utterly invested in creating the perfect visual presentation! It’s incredible to witness his concentration and developing attention to detail, even at such a young age. This unexpected talent adds another layer of joy, engagement, and creative collaboration to our workdays.

Oh, and it’s worth mentioning that Grant has a particular, undeniable obsession with freeze-dried raspberries. They are, without a doubt, his absolute favorite snack. So, it comes as no surprise that he rarely misses an opportunity to get his hands on some of those “nommy” treats, especially when they conveniently appear as part of a photoshoot setup! Integrating his favorite snacks into the scene often makes the entire process smoother, more enjoyable, and undeniably more authentic for him.

Again and again, Grant demonstrates his eager willingness to help out in the kitchen. Here, he’s assisting with the spiralizing of zucchini and meticulously preparing other vegetables. He’s incredibly handy, and I firmly believe that involving him in these practical tasks not only teaches him valuable life skills but also instills a profound sense of importance and ownership. It makes him feel like a vital, contributing member of the team, fostering a love for healthy food and the process of cooking from a very young age.

Finally, we encounter a classic toddler dilemma: is he carefully arranging the English scones just right for the perfect photo, or is he subtly attempting to steal one for a quick, unobserved bite? With Grant, it’s often a delightful and unpredictable blend of both intentions! These candid, charming, and often humorous moments are precisely what make working with him so uniquely memorable and a constant source of joy. Every day is an adventure, and every photoshoot has its own delightful little story waiting to unfold.

The Reality of a WAHM: The Indispensable Support System
While I truly adore having my sweet Grant in the kitchen with me, and I genuinely wouldn’t trade these precious moments for anything, I also need to be completely honest and transparent about the practical realities. The truth is, accomplishing a significant amount of “work” – particularly complex cooking tasks, detailed food photography, or focused writing – can be incredibly challenging, if not nearly impossible, when he’s actively involved and requiring constant supervision. The demands of keeping a toddler safe, happily engaged, and emotionally supported often, and rightly so, take precedence over professional tasks.
This is precisely where my immense gratitude for my robust support system comes into play. I am incredibly fortunate and deeply thankful to have my wonderful husband and my incredibly supportive in-laws who readily step in to help on those more demanding cooking and shooting days. Whether it involves taking Grant out to the ranch for an exciting adventure, engaging him with play at home, or simply babysitting for a few crucial hours, their help is utterly invaluable. It’s this consistent and understanding support that allows me to carve out focused, uninterrupted time for essential recipe testing, elaborate photography sessions, and concentrated writing, ensuring that I can meet deadlines and continue to grow my passion projects. Without their unwavering understanding, assistance, and flexibility, the work-at-home mom dream, especially in such a hands-on field, would be far more difficult, if not impossible, to sustain effectively.
Our journey together, blending professional work with the beautiful chaos of daily parenting, is a continuous learning process. It demands immense flexibility, a good sense of humor, boundless patience, and a deep appreciation for every small victory and every helping hand extended. It is a profound privilege to build this life, creating delicious food and engaging content, all while nurturing my son’s innate curiosity and helping him explore the vast and wonderful world around him. These are the moments, both big and small, that make this unique WAHM experience so incredibly rich and fulfilling.
