Watching our little munchkin grow and explore the world around him becomes more captivating and fulfilling with each passing day. At nine months old, Grant is not just reaching milestones; he’s soaring past them with an infectious joy and curiosity that brightens every moment.

Since the day he arrived, Grant has filled our lives with nothing short of pure delight. And while it might sound like a proud mom’s bias (okay, maybe a little!), his consistently calm, relaxed, and incredibly happy disposition is truly remarkable. He possesses a peaceful demeanor that is a constant source of wonder.

A Personality That Shines: Calm, Happy, and Full of Surprises

Grant’s joyful nature is truly his defining characteristic. He is almost always smiling, giggling, or curiously observing his surroundings. We’ve found that his moments of crying are so infrequent that they often catch us off guard! In fact, when he does cry, it’s such a rare occurrence that I sometimes instinctively reach for my phone to capture the moment, only for him to stop, spot the camera, and immediately switch to making his signature funny faces. Right now, his favorite expression is an adorable ‘O’ face that he perfects with comedic timing, much to our amusement. Beyond his cheerful disposition, Grant also showers us with the sweetest affection. I distinctly remember the first time he gave me a proper kiss; I initially thought it might be a happy coincidence, but it quickly became clear it wasn’t. Now, when I ask for “too many kisses” in a row, he’ll playfully turn my face away with his chubby little hand, already showing his budding independence and refusing my over-the-top smooches. We’re thrilled to announce that Grant has welcomed his first two bottom teeth! This is a significant milestone in any baby’s development, often accompanied by discomfort, irritability, and sleepless nights. However, we’ve been incredibly fortunate. Grant has shown virtually no signs of distress or pain related to teething; the only noticeable change has been a bit of excessive drooling. His continued happy demeanor through this phase is a testament to his easygoing nature, reinforcing our belief in what a wonderfully content baby he truly is.

A Dynamo on the Move: Mastering Mobility

At nine months, Grant is a true little dynamo, constantly on the go! His motor skills are developing at an impressive pace. He crawls with remarkable speed and efficiency, especially when he spots an enticing open gate or, more mischievously, an open fridge. This newfound mobility means our home has become an exciting playground for him, but also requires vigilant baby-proofing.

He effortlessly pulls himself up on anything and everything – furniture, toys, our legs – showcasing his strength and determination. Once upright, he loves to cruise around, holding onto furniture, practicing those crucial steps towards independent walking. This constant movement is not just playful exploration; it’s a vital part of his physical development, building muscle strength, coordination, and spatial awareness. Witnessing his eagerness to explore and conquer new physical challenges fills us with pride and excitement for what he’ll learn next.

Developing Independence: Self-Entertainment and Early Communication

The Art of Self-Entertainment

One of Grant’s most impressive traits is his ability to entertain himself independently. This is a skill that many parents cherish, and we are so grateful that he excels in this area. Whether I’m busy preparing a new recipe in the kitchen or tackling a stack of dishes, Grant is perfectly content and engaged in his play area. He happily cycles through his favorite books, various toys, and his interactive walker. This capacity for independent play is not only incredibly helpful for me, allowing me to manage daily tasks, but it’s also crucial for his cognitive and emotional development, fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and a sense of self-sufficiency. We believe it’s an important foundation for his growing independence.

Our Little Communicator: Clapping for “Done!”

It seems we may have inadvertently taught our baby a unique form of sign language! Not traditional ASL, but rather a custom sign we’ve developed together. My husband, Garrat, and I have a habit of clapping and saying ‘good job’ when Grant finishes his food, encouraging him to complete his meals. It appears he’s keenly observed and internalized this. Now, when he decides he’s done eating – even if there’s still food on his tray – he starts clapping his little hands with gusto as a clear signal of refusal. It’s an incredibly clever and endearing way for him to communicate his satiety and independence. We’re constantly amazed by how quickly he picks up on cues and creates his own methods of expressing himself; what a smarty pants he is!

Daily Rhythms: Schedule and Feeding Adventures

The Magic of a Predictable Schedule

Maintaining a consistent schedule has been a cornerstone of our parenting approach, and Grant continues to thrive on it. His predictable daily routine for sleep, play, and meals is nothing short of amazing. For a Type-A mama like myself, having days that are somewhat predictable is absolutely crucial for managing work, household chores, and personal well-being. This structured approach not only brings a sense of calm and order to our home but also provides Grant with the security and rhythm that supports his healthy development and consistent good mood.

The Great Feeding Battle

While many aspects of Grant’s development are smooth sailing, feeding has presented its own set of challenges. He eats solids and purees with enthusiasm, exploring new tastes and textures. However, his enthusiasm for nursing has waned considerably. As a result, I am now exclusively pumping to ensure he receives the vital nutrients of breastmilk. This, too, has become a daily struggle, as he is not particularly fond of eating from a bottle. Ensuring he consumes the minimum recommended 24 ounces of breastmilk each day requires patience, creativity, and persistent effort. Despite these hurdles, we remain committed to providing him with the best possible nutrition, knowing how important it is for his growth and immunity.
