Hey there, fellow adventurers and food enthusiasts! While I don’t have a new recipe bubbling in the kitchen for you today, I’m thrilled to take a moment and whisk you away on a journey through my incredible summer. It’s high time I pulled back the curtain on a little slice of my sweet & savory life, sharing some of the most memorable moments and breathtaking sights. Out of the countless photographs I’ve captured this season (anyone else struggle with taking just *one* too many photos?), I’ve carefully selected a few to paint a vivid picture of my adventures. Prepare for a vibrant recap of cultural immersions, heartwarming family reunions, and awe-inspiring natural wonders that truly defined my summer.
An Unforgettable Summer Journey: Exploring Cultures, Cuisines, and Breathtaking Landscapes
Late June: A Glimpse into Tomorrow in Tokyo, Japan
My summer odyssey began with an exciting overnight layover in the dazzling city of Tokyo, Japan. Rather than merely passing through, I seized the opportunity to dive headfirst into this dynamic metropolis, even for a brief moment. I was incredibly fortunate that some wonderful foodie friends, whom I’d connected with through Facebook (online friendships are truly a real and invaluable thing these days!), reside in Tokyo and generously offered to be my guides. Their warmth and local insights transformed what could have been a fleeting stop into a deeply enriching experience.

My time in Tokyo was utterly delightful, a perfect blend of exceptional food and fantastic company. From the moment I stepped out, I felt as though I’d been transported into the future. The city hummed with advanced automation, yet this technological marvel was beautifully complemented by an unparalleled level of customer service. Imagine ordering your meal from a tablet right at your table, or watching a vending machine seamlessly process your payment just by holding your wallet near a sensor! And don’t even get me started on the restrooms – they were an experience in themselves. This fusion of cutting-edge technology and profound hospitality left an indelible mark, showcasing a society that values both efficiency and genuine human connection.

During my exploration, we made a stop at a bustling street food stand, renowned for attracting many Japanese celebrities. It was incredible to savor authentic local flavors in such a lively atmosphere, feeling the pulse of Tokyo’s culinary scene. The energy was infectious, and every bite was a delicious discovery.

Of course, no visit to Tokyo would be complete without experiencing the legendary Shibuya Crossing. Standing amidst the synchronized chaos of thousands of pedestrians crossing simultaneously felt like being part of a meticulously choreographed urban ballet. The sheer scale and energy of this famous intersection were absolutely mesmerizing, a true spectacle of modern urban life.
July: A Month of Heritage and Heart in Mongolia
After the futuristic marvels of Tokyo, my next destination was a deeply personal one: my motherland, Mongolia. Here, I was blessed to spend an entire month immersed in the warmth of my family. There’s truly nothing comparable to the joy of quality time with my parents, sisters, nieces, and nephew. Witnessing the children grow at such an astonishing pace filled my heart with both wonder and a touch of wistfulness. My oldest niece, now two, is a chatterbox, engaging in non-stop conversations. The second niece, a year old, is a whirlwind of energy, walking and running with boundless enthusiasm. And my nephew, who just celebrated his first birthday, is already a determined little man, eager to take his first independent steps. These precious moments, filled with laughter and milestones, are treasures I’ll cherish forever.

One of the highlights of my time in Mongolia was attending the iconic Naadam festival in Erdenet city, my beloved hometown. Naadam is far more than just a festival; it’s a profound national holiday, a vibrant celebration of Mongolia’s rich cultural heritage, centered around the “Three Manly Games”: wrestling, horse racing, and archery. The atmosphere was electric, filled with patriotic fervor and the thrill of competition. Watching the powerful wrestlers, the fearless young jockeys on their swift horses, and the skilled archers was an unforgettable experience that deeply connected me to my roots.

Embracing the nomadic spirit, I had the incredible opportunity to ride both a horse and a camel across the sweeping Mongolian steppes. There’s a profound sense of freedom and timelessness that comes with traversing these ancient lands on horseback, feeling the wind in your hair and the vastness of the sky above. Riding a camel offered a different, equally enchanting perspective, a gentle swaying motion that echoed the rhythms of this magnificent country.

Another truly authentic experience was a day spent camping by the river, culminating in the preparation of a traditional Mongolian meal known as Khorkhog. This isn’t the “Mongolian barbecue” concept many Americans are familiar with; rather, it’s a unique culinary art form. Khorkhog involves cooking meat (often lamb or goat) and vegetables with superheated stones inside an airtight container. The stones infuse the food with incredible flavor and tenderness, creating a communal dining experience that is both ancient and deeply satisfying. It was a wonderful taste of genuine Mongolian hospitality and gastronomy.

Just before my Mongolian vacation drew to a close, I received an exciting invitation to appear on a cooking TV show called “Sweet Kitchen.” This marked my very first television appearance, and what an exhilarating experience it was! I had the pleasure of preparing and sharing some of my favorite recipes: my savory mushroom quiche, delightful cheesecake bars, and a refreshing fruity sangria. It was an absolute blast to showcase my passion for cooking on screen and connect with a wider audience through the universal language of food.
August: American Adventures and Road Trip Wonders
As all good things must eventually find their natural end, it was time to return home to my loving husband in the US. However, this journey held a special twist: I brought my wonderful mom along with me for her very first visit to the United States! We were determined to show her as much as possible of this vast country during her stay. Our inaugural stop was the magnificent Theodore Roosevelt National Park, a place where these grand “big boys”—the majestic wild buffalo—roam freely.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park offered a breathtaking introduction to America’s wild beauty. Seeing the powerful buffalo in their natural habitat, against the backdrop of the rugged Badlands, was an awe-inspiring sight for all of us, especially my mom. The expansive landscapes and untouched wilderness truly captured the spirit of the American West.

Our urban explorations included a necessary shopping spree at the legendary Mall of America in Minneapolis, MN, an absolute spectacle of retail and entertainment. Afterward, we found serenity amidst the urban bustle at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. This tranquil oasis, home to the famous Spoonbridge and Cherry, was a perfect spot to relax, appreciate art, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
A few weeks later, my husband, mom, and I embarked on an epic 1550-mile road trip across North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota. It was an ambitious journey, but every mile was filled with discovery and delight. We created countless cherished memories, and these incredible photos are a testament to the unforgettable time we shared.

Yellowstone National Park truly lives up to its reputation as a magical place. Its geothermal wonders, vibrant hot springs, and abundant wildlife create a landscape unlike any other. My absolute favorite spot was the breathtaking Sapphire Pool, pictured with me beside it. Its waters are so impossibly clear, so intensely blue, and seem to delve into unimaginable depths. But honestly, every corner of Yellowstone is simply beautiful, from the gushing geysers to the colorful prismatic springs and the diverse animal life. It’s a place that demands to be explored and revered.

And here’s my handsome husband, Garrat! I realize I don’t often share many pictures of him, but he’s always by my side, especially as my #1 taste tester for all my sweet and savory creations. He’s an incredible travel companion and makes every adventure even more special.

Just south of Yellowstone, we marveled at the dramatic peaks of Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. The jagged, snow-capped mountains piercing the sky were a magnificent sight, offering a stunning contrast to the geothermal wonders of its northern neighbor. The grandeur of the Tetons is simply unforgettable.

Our road trip continued to Thermopolis, WY, a truly neat town. One of its most captivating features is this incredible cliff, which is essentially formed by mineral deposits from the natural hot springs. The vibrant colors and unique textures created by thousands of years of mineral flow are truly a sight to behold. Isn’t it absolutely beautiful how nature crafts such intricate masterpieces?

And along our journey, we encountered this charming little guy – a very hungry squirrel! His bold and curious demeanor was adorable, a delightful reminder of the abundant wildlife that thrives in these beautiful national parks.

Throughout our drive, we were constantly surrounded by gorgeous mountains, each peak and valley telling a story of geological wonder. The sheer scale and untouched beauty of these natural landscapes provided an awe-inspiring backdrop to our adventure.

Devils Tower, Wyoming, stood as another monumental highlight. This unique geological formation, rising dramatically from the plains, is both mysterious and magnificent. Its distinctive fluted columns are a testament to ancient volcanic activity and a sacred site for many Native American tribes.

Our epic road trip culminated at the iconic Mt. Rushmore, SD. This was, I believe, my fourth visit, and yet, each time I stand before the colossal carvings of these four presidents, I am still utterly amazed. The sheer scale, the intricate detail, and the profound historical significance of this monument never fail to impress.
A Bittersweet Farewell and Artistic Wonders in Denver
Last week brought a bittersweet moment as Garrat and I traveled to Denver to see my mom off. Saying goodbye was difficult, especially after enjoying so much fun and warmth having her in the kitchen with me, sharing stories and laughter. To lift our spirits, my wonderful husband suggested a visit to our favorite Denver Botanical Garden, which was currently showcasing a captivating Chihuly Exhibition.

The Chihuly Exhibition was an absolute marvel. The vibrant, organic forms of Dale Chihuly’s glass art, nestled within the lush greenery of the botanical garden, created an almost ethereal experience. The dazzling colors and intricate designs of these glass masterpieces were simply astounding, offering a perfect blend of nature’s beauty and human creativity. It was the perfect way to conclude a summer filled with such diverse and enriching experiences.
I truly hope you enjoyed this photographic journey through my summer adventures. It’s been a season brimming with discovery, family connections, and the pure joy of exploring both familiar and new horizons. Thank you for joining me on this recap of my “sweet & savory life” outside of the kitchen!
